A Word about Foundations

They are building a house on the lot next to our house. It is a big house! (It could swallow our house four times over.) And, from the time the site was first excavated, the work has been going on for several months. And guess what . . .
They’re still working on the foundation of the house!
That’s right, the foundation is still under construction. They have drilled 20-30 piers, installed yards of steel rebar, poured yards of concrete, built plywood frames, more steel and more concrete to come. Can you believe it?
If you know anything about construction, you certainly believe it.
Think about it, once the house is completed, this is a part that no one will ever see, unless they happen to be in the crawl space. And yet, this part demands thousands of hours of time and labor.
We all know the principle at work here:
Unless the foundation is solid and firm, it does not matter what the house looks like.
Remember the children’s song, The wise man built his house upon the rock, and the rain came tumbling down.
Note: In the same way, people will spend tens of thousands (even hundreds of thousands) of dollars on the wedding but pay very little if any attention to the marital foundation.
Clearly, if the foundation of trust, respect, connection and emotional safety is not there, nothing else will stand for long. The marriage will be compromised, because the foundation is compromised, no matter how good it looks!
I believe the house next door will stand solid and firm for a very long time, because I can see first hand how much time and attention is being spent of the foundation. I just hope it doesn’t decide to swallow our house!
