A Word about the Semicolon

“I got a tattoo.”

She is a client.  She has three grown children.  I have known her for many years and have had sessions with her and her family members off and on over that period of time.  She gave her consent for me to share her story with you.

She had a really difficult time growing up.  Physical, emotional and sexual abuse.  Not her fault!  (Although, she has frequently blamed herself.)  And she married a man who turned out to be an abuser.  What are the odds?  Actually, the odds are very “good” that she would marry an abusive man!

She showed me her tattoo.  It is located on the inside of one of her fingers.  Very subtle.  It is a small semicolon.

“Tell me about it,” as any good therapist would have said.

She explained that a sentence followed by a period means that the sentence is over, finished, no more.  But a semicolon means that there is more to come!  Wow!

Did I mention she has struggled with depression, including suicidal thoughts over the years?  There have been times when she thought there was no more to come for her.  She now knows there is more–a lot more.  Thus, the tattoo.

She has been through a lot, and she has overcome a lot.  Her life is reasonably good today, and she is married to a wonderfully loving and supportive man.
