A Word about Yogi

“One of a kind” is a frequently-used term that is frequently used incorrectly.  Meaning, many of the people to whom the term is applied are not truly “one of a kind.”

Yogi truly was!

Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra

(May 12, 1925 – September 22, 2015)

Some of us remember him as an 18-time all-star, Hall of Fame catcher for the New York Yankees.

Others remember when he was one of the Yankees’ coaches and later, their manager.

Most of us remember some of his most famous quotes:

  • It ain’t over till it’s over
  • When you come to a fork in the road, take it.
  • If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.
  • It’s like déjà vu all over again.
  • You can observe a lot by just watching.
  • The future ain’t what it used to be.
  • No one goes there nowadays, it’s too crowded.
  • Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical.
  • It’s tough to make predictions, especially about the future.
  • Once, while burning leaves at his farm, the fire got slightly out of hand.  Yogi reported this to the local volunteer fire department.  When asked, “How do we get there,” Yogi replied, “Don’t you still have those red trucks?”

And one of my personal favorites.  When asked, “What time is it?”  Yogi replied, “You mean right now?”

Thanks, Yogi, for truly being one of a kind and for helping us smile!
