A Word about The Twilight Zone

The Twilight Zone is an American media franchise based on the television series created by Rod Serling. The episodes are in various genres, including fantasy, science fiction, suspense, horror, and psychological thriller, often concluding with a macabre or unexpected twist, and usually with a lesson.

A popular and critical success, it introduced many Americans to common science fiction and fantasy. The original series, shot entirely in black and white, ran on CBS for five seasons from 1959 to 1964.

One episode is entitled “The Fever.”  It is the story of an older married couple on their first trip to Las Vegas.  I was 12 years old when I first saw this installment, and I still vividly remember the details.  It may sound hokey, but it made a lasting impression on me–a positive one.

Spoiler alert:  It’s a morality tale about gambling addiction.  (Click on the image, and you will be directed to a 7-minute condensed version of the full episode.)

Note: The desire to buy scratch tickets, play slot machines, and visit casinos aren’t necessarily signs of gambling addiction. But when the desire to gamble becomes overwhelming to the point you can’t stop thinking about it until you gamble on something, this is probably a sign you need help. Those who suffer from gambling addiction will generally continue to gamble despite negative financial, legal, and social consequences.

The National Council on Problem Gambling operates the National Problem Gambling Helpline Network (1-800-522-4700). The network is a single national access point to local resources for those seeking help for a gambling problem. The network consists of 28 call centers which provide resources and referrals for all 50 states, Canada and the US Virgin Islands. Help is available 24/7 and is 100% confidential.
