I grew up in a medical family, and one of my first jobs involved working in my father’s pediatric clinic. From this experience, I learned the importance of physical pain. Pain stimulates a trip to the doctor and medical treatment, which ideally leads to restored health.
Therefore, the ultimate goal is not to eliminate the ability to feel pain; that would be detrimental to our health. Instead, the goal is to restore health by addressing the underlying cause of pain.
Likewise, emotional pain is an invitation to look at what is hurting, to make healthy changes and to grow towards wholeness. This, in a nutshell, is how I view the counseling process.
Some people are surprised to learn that that psychotherapy is my second career. I held a management position with a national company when I decided to make a career change. I returned to graduate school and earned a Master of Arts in Counseling from Dallas Baptist University. Today, I am gratified by the work I do and honored to continue my father’s legacy of healing.
Areas of Specialization
My counseling interests include:
- Anxiety and Fear
- Depression
- Family and Life Transition
- Grief and Loss
- Stress Management
- Individual Identity
- Boundaries and Codependency
- Family Relationships
- Workplace Coaching
My counseling approach depends upon the needs of my client. For those in need of in-depth counseling, I consider psychological, familial, spiritual and biological dimensions. Others are more responsive to Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which identifies and challenges the influence of unhealthy thinking on feelings and behaviors. For those struggling in the workplace, I draw from my management experience to provide business coaching. Finally, I use the MBTI, a widely respected personality assessment tool, to build communication skills, increase personal growth and improve relationships.
On a personal note, I have been married since 1990. My husband and I enjoy traveling, remodeling houses and participating in church activities. I am energized by a good workout, a stimulating book and, of course, a break-through session with a client.
