A Word about Vulnerability
A Word about Vulnerability
I have said it many times, and it bears repeating: Without emotional safety, there can be no true and lasting connection between two people!
That is why, in couples counseling, we help people learn how to be “safe” people and how to help their partner feel safe in their relationship.
We help them learn to let go of guilt and shame and to be as authentic and genuine as possible. In a word, when we feel truly safe with another person, we can be vulnerable; we can be who we really are without fear of judgment, criticism and rejection.
Brené Brown is an American research professor in The Graduate College of Social Work at the University of Houston. She has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy and is the author of five #1 New York Times best sellers: The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly, Rising Strong, Braving the Wilderness, and her latest book, Dare to Lead, which is the culmination of a seven-year study on courage and leadership.
If you click on her image, you will be directed to one of the best talks on vulnerability you will ever see (more that 40 million views)! She is a gifted author and presenter, and this presentation is both informational and inspirational. You will be glad you made the time to spend with her!
Additional Note:
Rudolf Dreikurs (1897-1972) was an Austrian psychiatrist and educator who developed Alfred Adler’s system of individual psychology into a pragmatic method for understanding the purposes of reprehensible behavior in children and for stimulating cooperative behavior without punishment or reward.
He was introduced to me when I was in graduate school, and I remember in detail his concept, “The Courage to be Imperfect.” It resonated with me, then and now! (I have a copy of a speech by Dr Dreikurs that I would be pleased to share. Just let me know by responding to this mailing.)
